IGNITING ARTS LEADERSHIP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON

Filling Cultural Gaps with Arts Education

The LA Philharmonic is doing something revolutionary — educating the arts world.  A recent trip to Venezuela offered the public a musical menu that featured the great symphonies of Mahler and a collaboration with the celebrated Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, a local treasure.  The LA Philharmonic is devoted to providing educational programs to underprivileged musicians, which is evidenced in their commitment to El Sistema, an emerging leader in musical education.  More than anything, the concert tour attempts to bring together two very different cultures through the common bond known as music.  This article is very relevant to the Arts Enterprise course, mainly because it provides us with a model of sustainability.  Arts groups everywhere are facing an array of challenges, and the LA Philharmonic’s dedication to community shows their own desire to see art prosper in future generations — generations that will undoubtedly be in the hands of the young students that are being inspired through El Sistema.
